A business term loan is a lump sum repaid in scheduled installments, usually amortized so each payment covers interest and some principal. Shoreharbor Capital Group, a small-business funding broker in Wilson, North Carolina, explains amortization, balloons, covenants and prepayment terms to Wilson County owners and routes requests to lending partners, which decide and set rates and terms.

How a term loan works
You receive the full amount at closing and repay it on a fixed calendar, most often monthly. The interest rate may be fixed for the life of the loan or tied to an index and adjusted. The term is usually matched to what the money buys: a renovation that will serve the business for a decade can justify a longer term than a marketing push that pays off within a year.
Amortization on a term loan, explained
Amortization is the timetable that divides every payment into an interest part and a principal part. On a fully amortizing loan the payments stay level, but the mix changes: early payments are mostly interest, later ones mostly principal, and the balance reaches zero with the final payment. Ask for the amortization schedule with any offer. It shows the balance on every date, which matters if you plan to refinance or sell the business before the end.
Balloon payments on commercial loans
Some commercial loans calculate payments as if they ran for, say, fifteen years but come due after five. The remaining balance at that point, the balloon, must be paid in one lump or refinanced. Balloons lower the regular payment but shift risk to the end: if rates have risen or the business has had a weak year, refinancing may be harder than expected. Know the balloon amount and its date before signing.
What is a loan covenant?
Covenants are promises in the loan agreement beyond making payments. Some require the business to keep a minimum cash balance or a debt-coverage ratio; others forbid taking on more debt, selling key assets or changing ownership without permission. Breaking a covenant can be a default even if every payment has been made on time. Read them and ask the lender how each one is measured and how often.
Collateral and guarantees are separate clauses. Many business term loans are secured by business assets and backed by a personal guarantee from the owners.
Paying off a business loan early
Usually yes, but at a cost that depends on the contract. Some loans charge a prepayment penalty or a fixed fee; some calculate interest so that paying early saves little. Others allow early payoff with a real interest saving. If paying off early is part of your plan, for example after a large contract pays out, ask how an early payoff is calculated before you accept.
Uses that fit Wilson County, NC businesses
Wilson County's employer base is broad. In 2023 it counted 320 retail establishments, 208 in health care and social assistance and 199 in construction, while manufacturing, with only 84 establishments, carried the largest payroll of any sector at about $546.8 million (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Term loans fit the larger projects in that mix:
- A retailer fitting out a second shop or reworking a downtown Wilson, NC storefront (the storefront checklist covers the steps).
- A practice adding treatment rooms, where the build-out runs alongside equipment financing for the chairs and imaging.
- A contractor refinancing several short-term obligations into one schedule.
- A small supplier buying out a retiring partner's share.
For recurring, uneven costs, a line of credit is usually the better tool.
Where SBA and local help fit
A term loan from a bank, an online lender or an SBA-backed program can look similar on paper. Shoreharbor Capital Group does not arrange SBA loans. Free advisers can help you test a projection or a business plan before you ask anyone for money; the Wilson County help directory lists the state and federal offices. The four steps describe our side of a request.
